Why Technology and Life Learning Matters

March 20, 2017 by EmmaB 1 Comment

As a former teacher I am committed to lifelong learning. I am a totally self taught blogger. Eight years ago when I started blogging I had no idea on how it was going to change my career. I had no idea that I would leave teaching and blog full time. I certainly had no idea that I would achieve a lifelong ambition by writing a book Blogging Your Way to Riches. But I did!

Through blogging I have learnt to take better photographs, PR myself and even write a little bit of coding. As a child we had a spectrum followed by a BBC Computer, who remembers those? Hand up children of the 80’s! My dad gave me a book where I would spend hours copying out the code in order to play a game. The game was tennis. But I do remember the satisfaction I had when it finally started working.

As I headed off to university I would ring home from a phone box, reversing the charge of course.  I didn’t own a mobile until my second year and smart phones were a thing of the future.  Seen only in sci fi films!

As a parent I have embraced technology from the introduction of gamification for kids on ipads and phones enabling learning, along with television shows. GP Strategies Ltd have put together an example of how technology has altered learning.

As a mum I have really encouraged my children to work hard in the STEM subjects.  Not only are we heading towards a skill shortage in this area, it is where the money is.

How to encourage children develop in the STEM subjects

  • 5 Apps to support KS1 learning
  • Maths Rockx
  • Second hand educational resources to look for

Education is a gift and technology holds the key to success.  My children have learnt many skills from technology and it is great to see coding being added to after school clubs.

I still have things I would like to learn including improving my photography skills.  What would you still like to learn how to do better, let me know in the comments below.

Very useful post Emma. Once, a long time ago, education was something that was reserved for the elites of the world. The idea of a person without royal background or a lot of money attending a regular school, let alone a college was somewhat of a laughable idea. Thankfully, education has come a very long way over the years, and today it is even possible for a person to take courses and go through learning programs online. In fact, this method has become very popular, and there are a large variety of websites and “schools” that are now dedicated solely to online learning. All of this popularity, however, comes with a very high cost, and that cost is primarily in the form of fraud. However, with a little knowledge, you can arm yourself to avoid fraud and become an effective and educated student.

    Cheers then.
