It has been a busy two weeks here as I have been A Level marking. Many will know that I left teaching last year to have more of a family worklife balance. It has meant a change to our finances but an abundantly better family life. The stress and pressures have all but disappeared and I can be there for the children whenever I am needed. For example today is sports day and for once I’ve not had to juggle priorities to be standing at the finishing line.
Therefore A level marking seemed like a good way of making some money – I am a firm believer that we all have skills and can sell those skills. The marking is often the bit of the job that teachers moan about, mainly because it is done at weekends and in the evening which impinges of family time. Yet A Level marking (for me) could be completed in regular school hours. I didn’t think it would take too long (that bit I massively underestimated but hey!) and it would provide me with the money for a summer holiday this year.
However I also feel that should someone have better skills than me I will pay them to do the job for me because the time it takes me just isn’t worth my time. Does that make sense? For example with blogging I love the writing and I can make a living from it but if I want to play about with the theme or design a new header I would rather pay someone that has the skills and can do it quickly for me. I would take hours and those hours are also precious to me and take away the time that I could use more effectively.
Therefore for me being thrifty is not always about the cheapest option but the most worthwhile when I balance everything up. Sometimes it can be easy to take too much on and not in the families best interests. Another example is when you have those small DIY jobs that need doing – yes my husband could probably spend all weekend completing them but then he heads back to work on Monday not refreshed and not having had time to enjoy quality time with the children. Therefore I prefer to let a few of those jobs collect up and then call in a handy squad to get me sorted. This way everyone wins.
I also pay others to jobs the that I don’t like, if you want to learn a new skill it is worth investing your time in but if it is a means to an end why bother. You may save yourself some money but life is for living too and having fun. I now believe it is not worth doing what you don’t enjoy if there is someone who is good at it let them do it!
What jobs do you pay someone else to do?
