As a social policy graduate politics interest me. In my mind they should interest everyone and using your vote is very important. I was the women’s officer when at University – not just because I got free chips and cheese from the Student Union but because it gave me a voice. I thought seriously about standing as paid student union rep the year after finishing my course but Lee got headhunted down to Kent and the thought of staying in the North East on my own gave way to following my heart!
I have used today to talk to my children about politics and voting and why we should all use our vote. I explained to them that this is live history and you cannot really complain about the government and the country unless you have voiced your opinions. Therefore whilst today is a serious and important day and you need to consider which party best represents your beliefs and has policies that you agree with it is a day to get children interested in politics. As a teacher when I speak to my sixth form students it always surprised me how little they knew – let alone read the manifestos. One good thing about this election has been that we are looking outside the main parties. It has been encouraging to see more women in the live debates and the humanity they have bought to the debates. This result is suggested to be closer than ever as the polls are suggesting which means another hung parliament.
One task I often do as a sociology teacher is to see if my students recognise the popular and high ranking politicians. Often they only recognise one or two. Therefore I giggled today when I saw that My voucher codes have mocked up what another coalition givernment might look like.
This little beauty could be the offspring if Cameron and Leanne Wood climb into bed together and form a coalition government. To check out the other cheeky coalitions have a peek at superbious!
It is important to vote and I have been encouraged on Facebook to see so many people sharing that they plan to vote because the results matter. I think for some the hardest choice is not whether to vote but whether to vote tactically or to vote from the heart. I will be voting from the heart based on what matters to me.
