Have you ever added up what your contribution to the household is? Many of us know what our careers are worth, we add up the overtime and we know our worth. When we look for jobs we consider the salalry and when we take on more responsibility we ask for a promotion and a payrise. However what about the multitude of mum jobs that you do. How much time is spent playing doctor, teacher, taxi driver and chef. I had a go at working it out.
I have three children and their life balance was the primary reason for me changing careers a few years ago. Teaching was my professional job but the balance became, well, unbalanced. We were chasing our tails and it was just not working for us. I also had itchy feet and wanted to be more creative and make a living from blogging. Now that I have forged this career I do even more of the ‘wrap around care’ I cook, I clean, I taxi and I attend all the school stuff and do the school runs. It was how we chose to put things right for our family. It now works so much better and we are all happier. I no longer pay out for any childcare, which was actually taking a large cut of my income. Now I have less outgoing but that has actually increased my value to the family. yet I have received no mum promotion, no payrise. I am lucky when I get a thank you!!
If I add up what it would cost to replace me with a chef, a driver, a teacher and so on it comes to a staggering amount. Many families underestimate this cost but that could have a disastrous implication for your family. Life Insurance provides money to carry out these tasks should the worst ever happen. No-one wants to think of the what if’s but being educated and aware can make the difference. To find out just what your mum salary is complete this quick quiz What is your mum salary? and let me know in the comments. Did the figure surprise you and have you ever coonsidered just how your family would be able to afford the same level of care if you were no longer able to do it?
Being a mum is not always easy and this quiz also got me thinking about which parenting tasks would I outsource if I could. I don’t mind doing the washing – I actually find it quite calming! The task I would outsource would be cooking – I am a lazy cook and don’t enjoy it. I wish we ate better – I dish up a pretty limited range including spag bol etc but my children are easy to please and I know they would enjoy a more adventurous diet. For me I just don’t enjoy spending ages putting a meal together, cooking from scratch and then it being eaten in less than 20 minutes. I actually could no with a cookbook of quick family nutritious meals. Does anyone recommend a book I should seek out?
