The value of a university education has come under question in the last couple of years. As more people go and get degrees, there are more graduates struggling to find a job. When you’ve spent 3 years and a whole lot of money on your university education, not being able to use your degree to find a job is a big problem. That’s why a lot of people are opting to go straight into work or do apprenticeships instead. But you shouldn’t write off the idea of university altogether. Part of the problem is that the world of work is changing and companies need different skills than they used to. So, a lot of degrees aren’t going to be that useful and the graduates in those subjects will struggle to find work. But there are still a lot of courses that give you good skills that will help you to find a job. When you’re preparing your child for A levels and university, you should consider these degree courses that will actually help you to find a job.
It’s no surprise that studying medicine is likely to get you a job. There aren’t many people that finish their studies and don’t land a job in the medical field. However, as you probably already know, studying to be a doctor takes a long time. In total, it’ll be 7 years before you can actually start a job properly so you and your child need to consider whether they’re willing to commit for that long. On the other hand, you don’t need to be a doctor to work in medicine. You could also do a nursing degree which will be the same length as a standard degree. There is a shortage of nursing staff at the moment so career paths are clearly defined for people that study nursing at university.
Engineering is one of the most popular degree courses because there are a lot of job opportunities and they pay very well. If you’re a scientifically minded person with a fairly good grasp on mathematics, you’re well suited to a degree and a career in the engineering world. Even if you aren’t skilled in those areas, you can still work in the engineering industry. You can do a masters in engineering management which opens up job opportunities at a higher level. It’ll be your job to manage and direct teams of engineers and, while you’ll need some engineering knowledge yourself, you won’t be doing the hands on work. Engineering jobs all pay very well and there are a lot of them about so it’s a good degree to study for.
The massive advancements in technology over the last decade moved a lot faster than education could so there is a big skills gap there. Schools have started to update their lessons so they’re teaching kids the skills that they need and a lot of people are studying computer science at university so that gap is closing. However, there are still so many jobs for people with a computer science degree, especially as new tech startups are opening all of the time.
People are quick to say that degrees aren’t worth as much as they used to be but that’s only half true. There are still some degree courses that will help you find great jobs in the future.
