6 Ways to Improve your Financial Situation

December 15, 2020 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

When soaring inflation and the demands of a comfortable livelihood come together, the result is nothing but a shaken budget and an inner turmoil.

We’ve all been there when no matter how much we’d try to save, something or the other goes wrong and boom, we’re broke at the end of the month. Earning a livelihood is not easy, and it’s equally difficult to save enough to fulfill your demands for the future.

So, in such a case, something other than a greater paycheque can come to your aid. What, you ask? Read on!

Here are a few ways that can help you improve your financial situation.

1. Stick to a monthly budget

Going without a budget can make you go on a tipsy path. You’d end up spending more than you should, save less and be broke soon.

Hence, you need to prepare a monthly budget. Here’s how.

  • Determine your monthly income
  • Calculate monthly expenditure and group them into categories depending on the nature of expenditure
  • Calculate the difference between the two. Now, this is the amount you are saving. Make sure that the expenditure is less than your income. If it is otherwise, then you know spending less is your best bait.
  • Utilize your savings. You can either pay off your debts, opt for insurance, or invest in financial assets. Anyway, it would only benefit you in the future. If you are self-employed consider a Penfold Pension which I have reviewed.
  • Monitor the budget every month and be dynamic.

2. Determine your financial goals

Looking to invest in property? Or simply desire to purchase the car of your dreams? Whatever it is, you should know what you are working for. In other words, you should be crystal clear about your financial goals.

That being said, when you know what your goals are, you have to prioritise them. Once you do, you know what you’d be striving for.

3. Create a financial plan

Now that you have determined your goals, you have to figure out how to achieve it. You can pull in some extra shifts, you can invest or you can simply save more. Whatever it is, you have to have a plan. My post on side hustles will help achieve these goals.

That being said, a financial plan concerns both savings and investment. Therefore if you are to fund your kid’s University fee, or invest in a house, your financial plan should be built around that.

4. Distance yourself from credit cards

A credit card might seem like a wand of power when you’re low on money. But in reality, it is nothing less than a quicksand drowning you into debts. Therefore, switching to a debit card is a better option as you’d be well acquainted with your expenditure limit determined by your account balance.

5. Be mindful of your expenditure

This goes without saying- you have to be mindful of expenditure. But how to?

For starters, you can maintain a ledger and record transactions then and there. (Don’t wait up. It’ll only hurt in the end)

Tip- If you are distant from your ledger/excel sheet, note it down on a notepad or your phone’s note app.

Additionally, you can go by setting limits and try the following ways.

  • Get rid of shopping apps on your phones.
  • Don’t go window shopping unless you have to buy something.
  • Keep reminding yourself that an extra pair of shoes would hurt your ultimate financial goals. (Variable for every individual)

6. Become an investor

You might deem investing a risky business since it involves a huge deduction from your bank accounts and is full of risks. But remember it is an unearned income and would provide huge returns if gone right. Therefore, you have to learn to take risks and become a SMART investor.

Becoming a smart investor requires you to research thoroughly the company you are investing in, the trends, financial performance, and the future scope before you invest. I invest with Nutmeg which I totally recommend, my returns are currently at 12% which I am super happy with. I have a regular £100 going into this account each month. Finally

Improving your financial situation doesn’t mean you have to drag your way up to the goal. It means that you have to swear by the 3S, i.e., you have to function smart, smooth, and systematic.
