5 Exciting Travel Ideas In Retirement

October 19, 2022 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

Contrary to common belief, retirement is the best time to travel. Indeed, many Britons are concerned about missing out on travel opportunities while they are still working. However, retiring doesn’t stop you from travelling. On the contrary, if there is anything we can learn from happy pensioners is that retirement is the best time to travel!

First of all, it can help combat one of the main issues that seniors experience, which is physical inactivity. Indeed, many seniors find themselves naturally staying at home after their retirement, and they can struggle to keep their body healthy and their mind sharp. Travelling can dramatically boost your health.

Additionally, it is a chance to make new friends and meet new people. Retirement can feel lonely as you can feel disconnected from your former colleagues and group of friends.

But more importantly, retirement gives your time and freedom. More often than not, travel plans can be tricky to arrange when you’re still working, and the kids go to school. As a retiree, you can choose to go on an adventure whenever you want and benefit from the best off-season prices.

Unsure where to go? Here are 5 ideas for your bucket list!

#1. Reconnect with your inner child: Disneyworld

You are never too old to enjoy the magic of Disney, and that is precisely the reason why the Walt Disney World resort hotels are designed to meet the expectations of guests of all ages. Besides, you could even enjoy a senior discount, so there’s another reason to book here for a stay you won’t forget.

With attractions, themed restaurants, and fun characters to interact with, it is fair to say that you will soon forget all about your age. Disneyworld is a place for children of all ages, and that’s exactly what Walt Disney intended it to be.

#2. Let someone pamper you

Spa holidays are growing in popularity in the UK. The luxury spa packages are a high-end experience, but they are worth every penny. Indeed, a spa break is a peaceful time where you can let yourself be spoiled by attentive experts. Spas provide a lot more than skin care treatments. When you book a spa break, you enter a world of indulgence that soothes both your mind and your body. You can feel rejuvenated, relaxed, and, more importantly, cared for.

For many retirees, stress doesn’t just disappear because you stop working. The hectic lifestyle caused by a conflicted work life and home life leaves a long-lasting mark on your mental and physical health. So, a luxury spa vacation can be the best way to celebrate your retirement and prepare for new challenges!

#3. A rural break

Turn off your mobile phone and forget about the news and the family chat on a rural holiday in a remote location. In the 1930s, doctors recommended coastal stays to improve their patients’ health. A rural break is the new seaside health-focused holiday. It is a time when you can live at your own pace and disconnect from the constant stimulation of digital devices. You can buy fresh food from local farm markets and spend your days enjoying the outdoors.

Rural breaks are uncomplicated, and they take you back to the essential, reminding you to slow down and enjoy every day to the fullest.

#4. Exploring life overseas

Overseas holidays typically last for a week or two. But as a retiree, you can take as much time as you need to discover a new culture. Why rush through Paris in a weekend when you can take your time to explore the quirky little streets of the French capital and the surrounding regions? Taking it slow means two things:

  1. You can absorb more
  2. You can avoid the stress of a packed agenda

So, don’t visit places like someone ticking them off a list. Instead, slow your pace and be a local for a few weeks. Be someone who lives there rather than a passerby who rushes through.

#5. Share your skills

You may not be a suitable candidate to join active volunteering programmes that help build villages and structures, but you could look for options that let you teach abroad, for example. You could become a language teacher abroad for a few weeks or months, sharing your skills with the local population as you visit. Many teaching opportunities have stays of different durations and can provide accommodation too. If you are worried about travelling alone, it can be a great way of making new friends while exploring.

Hopefully, these few travel ideas can inspire you to book your first trip as a retiree. Whether you want to relax in a spa tub or discover a foreign culture, there is more than one way to travel!
