There’s No Right Or Wrong Way To Parent Your Child

February 16, 2023 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

There is no right or wrong way to parent your child. There are some people out there that think that just because they did things in a specific way and it worked for them, that it should work for everyone else too. This is not the case because parenting is not a one shoe fits all experience, as kids are different, and parents are different. It’s important that you are doing the things that work for you and your child, and it’s nobody else’s business to be completely honest.

In this article, we’re going to be talking about some of the things that you might want to know about parenting and how to be the best parent that you can be. Keep reading if you would like to find out more.

Advice From Others Can Be Helpful Sometimes

The first thing that we’re going to say is that advice, tips and tricks from others can be helpful sometimes. If you have asked for an opinion and someone is giving you one, or if you have asked for help and they are giving you advice then this is absolutely fine. You also need to know though that you do not have to take the advice that has been offered. It’s perfectly okay to ask what other people have done, and then go in your own direction if you feel as though that is what is going to work better for you and your child.

A perfect example would be the sleep regression at 6 months. This doesn’t happen with all babies, but if your baby has been sleeping lovely up until 6 months and suddenly things start to change, this can be very challenging for you. You can ask people online or people in your life how they managed the sleep regression as it can be very difficult to navigate. In the end, you have to find what works for you as the parent, and for your child.

You Need To Trust Your Instincts

When you become a parent, your maternal or paternal instincts kick in and the one thing that you should never do is ignore them. It doesn’t matter if your child is a baby or a teenager, if your instincts are screaming something at you, then you need to listen. A lot of parents just convince themselves that they are being paranoid, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. For example, if your baby or your toddler is acting a little off and you have the instinct that they are not well, then you need to take action.

Everyone says that the parents know best, and this is absolutely true. You are more connected and more in tune with your child than anyone else in the world, no matter how old they are and your instincts are there to protect them. Listen to them, and if you do turn out to be wrong, well at least you were safe and not sorry.

Remember That You’re Learning Too

Try to remember that you are also learning. When you have a child you do not know everything, and nobody expects you to know everything. You will make mistakes, you will get things wrong, and you will have to go through trial and error sometimes to find the right solutions to life, but you will get there. Like your children, you are learning about the world every single day, and there are times when they are going to look to you to guide them. Sometimes you will be able to, and other times you’re going to have to learn together how you navigate your way through life.

It’s an experience to grow with your child. You might have thought that you were fully grown up until this point, but when you have a kid everything changes. Your perspective changes, the way that you think changes, and you grow into a new person with them. It’s okay to take your time with this, and it’s okay to let them see your mistakes as it teaches them that nobody is perfect.

Each Child Is Different To Another

Every child is different. There are no two children that are exactly alike, and that means that you can’t treat them exactly alike. There are some people out there who would say that you should just take one approach to kids as they are all the same, but these people are wrong. Your child is completely different to some else’s, and there is nothing wrong with that. The thing that you need to focus on is being there for your child, and not worrying about if someone else thinks that you are doing things wrong. What works for one child will not necessarily work with another, ao it’s down to the parent to do what is best.

They Will Go Through Stages…

Every kid will go through stages in their life, and it’s just a case of working through them. We mentioned the six month sleep regression above, but most kids go through multiple sleep regressions in their lifetime so you need to be prepared for that. They are going to go through stages where they are going to test boundaries, where they are going to not want to eat, where they are going to drive you right up the wall, and times where they are emotional. These are all of the normal stages of being a person, and if you look closely, you will notice that you go through all of these stages too.

It’s at this time that you have to really try to stay calm, and remember that they are people too. They are entitled to have their bad days, and they are entitled to be difficult sometimes. They do not owe you happiness, and they do not owe you yes all the time.

Lean On Those Around You When You Need To

Some people have the belief that because you are the one that had the baby, you are the only one who should be taking care of it, but this is an outdated view. The expression is ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ not it takes a single person. It is okay to lean on the people around you if you need to. It’s okay to have a night away from your child when things are getting overwhelming. It’s okay to ask someone to watch your child while you go and run errands or while you have a bath.

Leaning on those around you does not mean that you have failed as a parent or that you are doing a bad job. It simply means that you are human and that you need a break like everyone else in the world. Don’t be afraid to lean on loved ones when you need to, they won’t mind.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see that there is no right or wrong way to parent a child. There are so many different ways of bringing up children, and there is nobody that can tell you that you are wrong as long as your kids are safe and healthy. It’s important that you are doing everything that you can as the parent to give them the best life possible, and we don’t mean with material things, but by showing your affection and loving them. We wish you the very best of luck, and hope that you manage to find a way of parenting that works for you.
