Ultimate Guide to Buying Dog Beds

March 24, 2023 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

Your dog will probably sleep more times in a day than you and therefore you need to consider getting them their own bed, not only for their comfort, but also for your convenience. A dog bed should provide a calm environment for your dog, so you should ensure it offers comfort, safety and it’s clean enough for your dog to enjoy. However, not many people know enough about getting the best dog beds and this guide is a great place to start.

Know your Dog’s Size

Your dog deserves a bed that fits its size and height. To measure your dog, wait until its sleeping then measure the distance from snout to the tail. You should add at least an extra 10 inches to accommodate for fast growth, especially if it’s a puppy. However, if your dog is no longer growing, ensure you still get a fitting bed by adding at least 6 inches to accommodate for stretching and periodic movements during sleep. A small bed will have a negative effect on your dog’s bone growth. Studies show that poor bone health, hip problems and exhaustion are directly linked to smaller or uncomfortable beds.

Picking A Safe Bed for Your Dog

When picking dog beds, few people ever consider the issue of safety especially when they are shopping during a crowded dog bed sale. Your dog may be prone to chewing, nibbling and other aggressive behaviors. This is especially common in younger dogs which haven’t been trained and a good dog bed is one that has enough foam to provide comfort beneath the beddings. The foam beds don’t overheat, and your dog is less prone to chewing them because the foam feels uncomfortable and doesn’t adequately address their teething problems.

How To Choose the Right Beddings

Bedding can either be foam or fabric. Foam is ideal but if it’s absorbent, you might have a hard time cleaning it and keeping germs at bay. Therefore a great combination is having both beddings and foam whereby the foam is covered by the right kind of fabric. Get fabric that doesn’t absorb too many fluids but can still offer protection, especially against cold weather. In intense heat, keep few beddings on your dog bed since the dog will likely just throw the beddings away and this might lead to chewing especially if its bored.

Choosing A Dog Bed Based on Your Dog’s Personality

Some dogs are burrowers, whereas others are not. A good dog bed should be able to accommodate your dog’s specific needs. For burrowers, ensure you have loose fabrics covering a good foam base. However, if your dog is not the burrowing type, simply ensure the framework is not too high so that your dog can simply lay down when it needs to.

Conclusion

Most dog beds try to focus more on ergonomic design, but the reality is that your dog doesn’t really care about aesthetics and simply wants something comfortable and clean. So ensure, you clean the dog bed often and try keeping some toys nearby so that your dog doesn’t get unnecessarily bored and starts chewing on the bed or the beddings.
