How You Can Beat a Bad Credit Score

April 1, 2023 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

Your credit score impacts your finances and your life overall. The higher your score, the better off you’ll be. Conversely, a poor credit score can make it difficult to get a loan, which can affect your ability to buy a vehicle, a home, or any other large purchase. As you can imagine, this is a stressful situation to be in.

The good news is that, while a bad credit score takes some work to fix, it is possible to do so. Here are some ways to improve your credit and your finances.

What Causes a Bad Credit Score?

A credit score is based on your financial history. Simply put, it is a reflection of how reliable you are when it comes to paying back loans. The most common reason that someone might have a poor credit score is that they haven’t borrowed any money.

If you have no history, then a bank can’t know how reliable you would be. This means that you are less trustworthy than someone who has already built up a good reputation and a good score. In this case, the best thing to do is to get a credit builder credit card. If you regularly use a credit card and pay it off promptly, then you build your credit score.

Another cause of a bad credit score is that you have already defaulted on loan payments in the past. Even a late payment can lower your score. The good news is that your score can go up as well as down.

Financial Triage

If your credit score is low because you struggle to pay off existing debts, then it’s time to sort out your finances. Inspect your bank balance and figure out where your money is going. If your expenses outweigh your income, then you may have to boost your income.

In many cases, you can cut down on your spending enough to pay off your debts. Set a budget and work to pay off existing debts as quickly as possible. You might be able to consolidate your debt to make this easier, or you could choose to pay off higher-interest debts one by one.

This will improve your credit score in itself, as it proves that you can deal with debt, and it will put you in a better position for the future.

Mortgage Applications

Building your credit score can take time and, if you plan on making a large purchase or taking out a mortgage soon, your current credit score might make things trickier. However, you can get some help that turns a seemingly impossible situation into something far more manageable.

Getting a mortgage with bad credit might be easier than you think, especially if you find brokers willing to deal with you. True, you might have to pay a higher interest rate and you will be limited in the amount that you can borrow, but it’s still possible. If you also save up for a healthy deposit before applying for a mortgage, you might be able to get a better deal.

In time, you can boost your credit score and get back on your financial feet.
