Countryside Retreats: Exploring the Benefits of Owning a Second Home

December 21, 2023 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

If you’ve got savings or inheritance that you’re looking to put to good use, then buying a second home to use for holidays may have crossed your mind. Perhaps you want to use it for some space to work in peace and quiet, or maybe you live in the city and would love a little country home to escape to a few times a year.

The idea has been around for some time now, and many people are realising that it’s actually more achievable than you might think. As long as you’re money conscious and can keep up with the mortgage payments, you could ideally own a second home.

Owning your own little space in the countryside also comes with wonderful benefits, so let’s take a look at them now.

You can get out of the hustle and bustle of the city

One of the biggest benefits of owning a beautiful place in the countryside is that it allows you to get out of the hustle and bustle of city life. Noone wants to spend all of their time in a built up area, especially when you can enjoy fresh air and rolling hills in the countryside. Not only that, but urban areas can actually be a lot of fun, meeting locals at the pub and simply having a space to get away from your regular busy life.

There are loads of agencies that can help you with this kind of buying. People realise that they need that space away from their regular chaotic lives and choose to find a place in the countryside as a welcome retreat.

You can make money from it seasonally

Some people don’t see the benefit of buying a second home if it’s going to be empty for large periods of time – and that’s completely understandable. But, you could choose to have your second home solely used for holiday or seasonal rentals and make more money than you would if you were to find a tenant for your second home. Holidaymakers are often more than willing to pay a lot of money per night for a serene getaway in the countryside. And, because it’s your property, you can block out periods where you want to have a countryside getaway and rent it out for the rest of the year.

You can use it as a short term investment

Having a second home isn’t for everyone, so it’s not the end of the world if you wake up one day and don’t want to keep it anymore. You can always sell it on and recover the money you’ve invested to use in something else. So, you may only have your second home for a few years but in that time, you could have made a very tidy profit indeed.

On the other hand, you may find that property values in the area are rising and you’re able to charge more for people to stay in your property, whether that’s holiday makers or full-time tenants.

As you can see, there are benefits that come with owning a second home in the country, so take them into consideration and see what you can get out of your investment!
