As a parent, it’s essential that you are supporting your child’s education to the very best of your ability, and that you are making it a priority to do so. There are going to be times where you struggle to make time for this, but you’ve got to power through nonetheless. Your kids should be a priority in your life, and their education is important if you want them to do well. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you can do to make this happen, so keep reading if you are interested in finding out more.
From A Young Age
It’s important that you are helping them develop from a young age. Of course, your small ones aren’t going to be in school yet, so anything that they learn is going to come from you or from those are you, which is why you have to be very selective about this. You want to make sure that you are doing all of the things that you are supposed to do when they are a toddler, helping them to walk, potty train, navigate the world around them as best they can at their young age and so much more.
Parents often forget that this is actually a part of education because they don’t do these things in school. But it is all part of learning! If you are worried that your child is not meeting milestones, then you can always look up what ones they should be hitting, and start encouraging that in your home. It might be that you encourage walking by holding their arms and trying to get them to move their feet. Or, it might be that you hold something out of their reach when they are standing to try and get them to move. There are so many different ways of teaching, and that’s okay.
Learning New Things Yourself
As a parent, there are going to be times where your child comes to you with questions about what they are doing at school. While it might be a tough pill to swallow, there may come a time where you have absolutely no idea what the answer to the question is. When that time comes, it’s a good idea to educate yourself on the subject matter so that if they ask again, or if they ask a similar question, you’re prepared. You can always look the answer up online for an immediate response, but after that, we strongly recommend learning what you can.
Some parents think that this is ridiculous because you’re not the one who has to know the subject matter, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t know it anyway. While it might not be important information for you to know, it’s important for your child to know for their education and that makes it important enough.
Helping With Homework
There are going to be times, starting with when your child starts school, likely right the way up until they leave, where they are going to ask you to help with their homework. In order for them to feel comfortable doing this though, you have got to be around enough for them to ask. Most kids have homework at least 3 times per week on average, so being present to be able to answer these questions is important. We do understand that there are some parents who are working and are unable to be at home even though they wish they could be, but in this case you need to have someone who can stand in for you. Whether this is a friend, a family member, or even a nanny, just someone who is there.
When you are home when they are doing their homework though, sit down with them and be there. Even if they don’t need your help, maybe do some of your own work at the same time so that they don’t feel as though they’re the only one doing something ‘boring’.
You can also add to their education by teaching them things that you know that they’re not learning yet, just be careful not to confuse them. For example, you can look up things like compound words for kids to help them understand them, making their life in literacy that much easier when they get there. If they don’t get it though, don’t push too hard, especially if they’re not at that level just yet.
Getting Them A Tutor
Last but by no means least, have you ever considered getting your child a tutor? If you know that they are struggling in some areas, or in one in particular, then it might be worth getting someone to give them the extra help they need. The great thing about a tutor is that they work with your child on a 1-1 basis which means they get all of the help and attention, rather than having to share it with others. This may even help to identify any other areas in which they are struggling but are being missed.
Even if you only get the tutor for a few hours per week, it could make a massive difference. Ensure that you are regularly speaking to this individual and asking if there is anything particular you can be doing to help them as well, as when everyone works together, that’s when you are going to see the best results.
Hopefully you have found this article helpful, and now have a better idea of some of the ways that you can do this. We understand that not everyone has hours to spend with their children each evening, but you should set at least some time aside for things like helping them with their homework. The more effort that you put in, the more effort they are going to put in, and then they are going to see better results. It’s a team effort between you, your child, and their school, so you need to ensure that you are pulling your weight.
