3 Ways to Protect Your Finances While Travelling When The Unexpected Happens

April 12, 2024 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

Travelling is truly an amazing experience. You get to see the wonders of the world, experience new cultures, and book adventures that you’d only ever dreamed of doing. But, unfortunately, unexpected things can happen at a moment’s notice. You might have this big trip planned but then you’re made redundant. Or, something might happen during your travels that you didn’t plan for financially. That’s why it’s important to prepare for the unexpected. It sounds a little backhanded, but by having contingency plans in place, you can still enjoy your trip away without damaging your finances too much. So, let’s take a look at a few ways you can plan ahead just in case life throws a curveball at you.

Start an emergency fund

One of the best and safest ways to make sure that you stay financially stable even if something goes wrong is by always having an emergency fund. That way, if something does happen that is going to cost you some money, you’ll have some backup cash so that you’ve got time to make a plan of action. For example, if you’re made redundant but have already paid for your trip, you can use your emergency fund as a means of living while still being able to enjoy your travels and not lose out on money by cancelling those plans.

You can build an emergency fund by putting a percentage of your income into savings each month. Or, if that’s not an option, you could declutter your home and sell some of your unwanted belongings to top up your emergency fund. It doesn’t matter if you can’t afford to add to it every month either; everything you add will make a difference, and the amount will soon build!

Get insurance!

Sometimes things can happen when you’re actually travelling that might hinder your finances. That’s why it’s important not to skip out on getting different insurances that are offered to you. For example, you might have hired a car to drive around your vacation destination. The problem you might face here is the quality of the roads, trusting other drivers, or even trying to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road. Either way, having that insurance in place will help keep your finances stable if something bad does happen.

You may also benefit from having the number of car accidents lawyers ready just in case, especially if you find yourself involved in a collision that wasn’t your fault.

Find alternative means of travelling

Finally, there may even come a time where you have to cancel your flights or choose different accommodation because of funds, but that shouldn’t mean you should miss out on the experience of travelling! Instead, consider driving to your destination, or choose to stay with a local family in exchange for help around their farm. It might not be what you envisioned, but it might actually enrich your travelling experience and encourage you to find new and interesting ways to travel on a budget!
