5 Innovative Tips to Help Improve Your Family’s Finances

March 13, 2020 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

As a mum, your responsibilities go far beyond making school lunches, helping with homework, and keeping peace on the home front. You are also tasked with keeping the family’s finances carefully balanced. No pressure, right? Phew! Finances can be tough and as a mum on the move with so much on your plate, you could do with a few helpful tips on how to improve your family finances right now. Do not worry; help is at hand.

What to Do to Improve Your Family Finances

You have come to the right place! Below are 5 tips on improving family finances that busy moms are already using. Check them out for yourself.

  1. Create a Family Budget and Stick to it.

Many Brits overlook the importance of budgeting, but not all of them. In fact, the BBC featured a story on one Birmingham family that managed to become debt free within 1 year, by sticking to a carefully planned budget! Don’t quite believe it? Read the BBC’s story here. No one likes to spend time creating a budget. It is a hack, but as a family, you absolutely have to. Create a basic family budget and make it available to all family members. Print it out and put it on the fridge. Kids will expect allowances but they also have to ensure that their family spending does not over-exceed the family budget. You can incorporate budget saving tips like turning off lights in rooms that are not being used, turning down the heating for certain hours in the day, buying cheaper cereal, eating homemade sandwiches for dinner instead of buying school provided meals, or foregoing cinema night – and so on.

  • Do Not Dip into Family Savings for Short Term Expenses.

Your family savings should be treated as no-go territory when it comes to spending. We all know how difficult it is to save and how easy it is to spend. If you want to protect your family savings, make sure that you do not dip into it when expenses arise. For instance, if you need to pay for a weekend away or pay for unexpected emergency, rather apply for a small loan from Multi Month Loans instead of compromising on your precious savings. Short term loans can be paid back quickly with minimal interest attached. They are also paid out within 24 hours, so you will not have to wait too long to get the cash that you need.

  • Join Loyalty & Rewards Programs to Save.

Loyalty and rewards programs can be quite beneficial to families. Take for instance a loyalty program at your favourite pizza place that provides you with a free meal for every 5 meals bought. This could result in a night of free dinners for the whole family one evening – and that is a great way to save. Some loyalty programs offer valuable cash back or discounts on future purposes. You have nothing to lose and every to gain from loyalty and rewards programs.

  • Scrutinise Your Existing Bills & Expenses.

Every family in the UK is faced with standard expenses that they just cannot get around. Think about rent, heating services, power services, cellular services and broadband services. All of these can be considered an essential service, but you are not forced to get these services from one particular provider. This provides you with the opportunity to shop around for better prices or chat to your service provider about getting better rates. If you can save a few pounds here and there, it will put your family finances in a better position.

Expenses can also include your college or uni students that you are supporting. Look at how much you are spending on phone contracts or gym memberships for example. Students might also need college homework help rather than using tutors.

  • Embrace the Concept of Coupon Shopping.

Most people overlook coupon shopping as something that “other people do”. But what if you could save hundreds of pounds a month just by embracing the idea of coupon shopping? Money Saving Expert provides some great tips on how to use coupon shopping to your advantage.

Last Word

Becoming debt free might take you a little longer than a year to achieve, but what you can achieve is a vast improvement on your family finances, just by making a few simple changes. When trying to improve your budget, remember that it is your spending habits and your attitude towards the money that you do have that makes all of the difference. Improving your family budget might be all about changing how you perceive your income and working together with your family to spend wisely. Good luck!
