How to Maintain Warm homes During Cooler Months

March 13, 2020 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

Cold weather can put stress on your pocketbook and even your heart. No matter your budget, there are several ways to help keep your home warm during the cooler winter months. Investing a little bit and making several little fixes around your home can save your family money over the many winters to come.

Health Concerns in the Cooler Months

Cooler temperatures affect certain health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, asthma and can put additional strain on the heart. The heart is more stressed and pumps faster to keep the body at a constant temperature. If you suffer from dust and mold allergies, symptoms may increase by spending more time indoors in the cooler months. Keeping a warm cozy home is necessary for the health of the family.  Changing any filters regularly and introducing a humidifier or air purifier will help maintain good air quality.

Inexpensive Solutions to Insulating your Home

The cost of heating your home rises when winter comes so the first step is to do a home assessment and find out if your money is literally flying out the door. Adding insulation strips or caulking to doors and windows is a great way to make sure the warm air stays in and cold air stays out.  Electrical outlets on exterior walls are also a source of drafts and can be fixed with an inexpensive insulation kit. If you have ceiling fans, make sure they are set to spin clockwise so they will push the warmer air gathered near the ceiling down to the floor level. You can also make sure your couch isn’t positioned in front of drafty windows.

Long Term Investments to Keep Your Home Warmer in Winter

Installing double pane windows and making sure your roof has adequate insulation are both important when looking at ways to keep your home warmer when it becomes cool outside. Investing in a more efficient furnace or a heat pump is also a long term solution that could save you money on your power bill in the winter months.  Heat pumps also work as an A/C unit, so that is an added bonus.

Inexpensive Gadgets that Help to Maintain a Warmer Home

Space heaters and infrared smart heaters have really come a long way. As well as being functional and energy-efficient, they also are very decorative no matter what your style.  You will probably be able to find an app on your phone to interact with these fun gadgets too. The electric blanket has evolved into a dual climate smart duvet and the electric fireplace has transformed into a beautiful wall piece that hooks up to your Bluetooth. From pocket warmers to electric socks, there is something for everyone to keep them nice and cozy this winter season.

No matter what you choose, there is an abundance of ideas and solutions to help you and your family stay warmer and more comfortable when the cold weather comes.
