Don’t Buy New: Repair and Upcycle

There is a time to buy new furniture and appliances and a time to repair and replace. If you’re the money-saving type or the environmental type, you will try repairing your home items before replacing them. Find out more about repairing and upcycling home items in the article below.

Dishwasher Repair

A dishwasher is an electrical appliance, and many things can go wrong with it. Some common dishwasher issues include leaks, drainage issues, and electrical issues. The good news is that many of these common issues can be repaired by someone in the house with some DIY skills.

Chances are you will encounter a drainage issue with your dishwasher at some point; this is caused by small air gaps in the connecting hose at the back. For a quick fix, run the garbage disposal for 30 seconds to clear out debris. If the issue persists, try replacing the drain hose.

Washing Machine Repair

Along with the dishwasher, the washing machine is probably the most used appliance in the home, and they don’t last forever. Some common issues with washing machines include leaking in the machine, strange noises, spinning issues, as well as common issues with drainage.

Again, you don’t have to invest in a brand new washing machine at the first sign of an issue; instead, you can repair the machine yourself when you buy appliance parts online. Replacement washing machine parts allow you to upgrade your current machine without overspending.

Smartphone Repair

Almost everyone has a smartphone these days, but smartphones also have a shelf life. Even when you buy the latest smartphone model, you can expect it to run into issues after a few years. But, there is a cheaper and better way to organize your smartphone lifestyle – repairs.

Smartphones can be repaired and updated with some special tools bought from the internet and a little DIY effort. Chances are you can find some instructions in an online video about how to replace the battery in your phone or upgrade it to help it last another few years and save money.

Furniture Upcycling

Whether you are bored with your current furniture or an item needs to be replaced, upcycling is usually cheaper and better than buying a new item. Upcycling your furniture is a great way to create new interest in your home interior, save money, and contribute to the circular economy.

Upcycling furniture is an enjoyable and creative way to spend some time on the weekend. Along with a secondhand furniture item, you will need some varnish or stain for the wood, some paint, and possibly a sander to take the rough edges off your new secondhand furniture in the home.

Mason Jar Upcycling

There’s a reason why mason jars have stood the test of time; they are durable and functional. Whether you have some mason jars laying around or you buy some with a view to upcycling them, there are plenty of options. Why not fill the mason jars with fairy lights for the garden, or fill then with used wax to make new candles from, reducing waste and contributing to the home?
