There is nothing as welcoming as a metal hoop wreath hanging on the front door inviting friends and family in. A hoop wreath can be used all year round and not just saved for seasonal events. Today we are sharing a metal ring hoop wreath tutorial that is simple to make but looks stunning.
Wreath making is really easy once you get the hang of it and there are so many variations that you can make. Using metal hoop wreaths makes it super simple even for a beginner. We like changing ours up for each season and you can make them for special occasions too like a baby shower or special event. A floral hoop wreath makes an ideal gift for others if you prefer to give personalised gifts.
Beautiful wreaths are often bought and sold at craft fairs and on Etsy so it can be a great skill to have and something that you could even turn into a side hustle! Traditionally we only saw wreaths at Christmas but now they are adorning doors all year round and I don’t blame people because they add interest to your home and are so welcoming.
What is the meaning of a door wreath?
There is symbolism in a door wreath in addition to them looking great. Did you know the circular shape represents eternity? From a Christian religious perspective, it represents an unending circle of life, eternity or life never-ending. This door wreath is ideal for summer and you can use real lavender that you have cut or alternatively use artificial flowers available from craft stores. Lavender is ideal as it dries well and smells lovely which is another welcoming touch for visitors to your home.
How to dry lavender
The most simple way to dry fresh lavender is to let it hang dry. Collect handful-size bouquets, secure the stems together with twine or a rubber band, and hang them upside down to passively dry.
Below is our step by step tutorial for a beautiful door wreath that you can make in an afternoon. We love seeing how seasonal decorations from thrift shops can be incorporated into modern designs. Wreaths don’t need to be expensive as we are showing in this tutorial that anyone can do!
Supplies for a hoop wreath
2 lavender bushels
Welcome wire round or welcome word
Wooden Half Beads (Amazon)
Scissors / wire cutters
Instructions for the Welcome Hoop Wreath
I started by cutting a small piece of ribbon to use as an extra piece to secure the top of the hoop. Add some glue using a hot glue gun between the large hoop and the welcome wire hoop. Next, wrap the small section of the ribbon around both hoops and add a little hot glue to secure. I found the welcome hoop in a pound shop like dollar tree or Poundland so if you don’t see the welcome sign you can improvise with other hoop wreath words or adapt something similar like a wooden word
To add the wooden half beads, add some hot glue to the wire hoop and place the wooden half bead on top. I spaced mine about an inch apart and I only ended up using half the bag to create this wreath so you have plenty of leftovers to use for another project. Repeat adding the wooden half beads almost all the way around the wreath. I left some space empty at the top where you will be adding the flowers and the bow.
To make the bow:
I cut 5 x six-inch sections of the burlap ribbon and 5 x 6.5-inch sections of the black and white ribbon.
Place the black and white ribbon on the bottom and then add the burlap ribbon on top of it. Have a little bit of the black and white ribbon on the ends so that you can wrap them over the burlap ribbon. Using a dab of hot glue add some to the burlap ribbon and fold the black and white ribbon over. Repeat this for each piece of the burlap ribbon. I laid the bottom 2 pieces in an X shape, then add one horizontally on top, then another X with the last two pieces. I cut a small piece of the black and white ribbon and just tied it in a knot to secure all of the pieces.
The next step is to add some hot glue to the top of the hoop and add the lavender bushels. I did not cut the ends so that I had enough to secure them to the wire hoops.
Next, add some hot glue to the back of the ribbon and add to the wire hoops.
How to hang the wreath
The easiest way to hang a floral wreath is with command hooks. These require no nails and allow you to simply place the wreath on any surface. Just press the wreath firmly against the command hooks to get a good connection.
