Have You Got a ‘RARE’ 50p in Your Purse?

November 26, 2018 by EmmaB 1 Comment

Have you seen claims in the media about certain 50p coins being worth much more than 50p? It seems to have really captured the imagination of everyday folk who desperately try to get certain coins. Only in the past few weeks, I have seen 50p coins being swapped and sold on Facebook selling pages.

Whether the Royal Mint only produced a limited number, or some kind of error made defects and produced a sought-after version, certain pieces can sell for hundreds or even thousands of pounds at auction.

Whether the Royal Mint only produced a limited number, or some kind of error made defects and produced a sought-after version, certain pieces can sell for hundreds or even thousands of pounds at auction.

The reason some coins are worth more than their face value is that there are defects on the coin – this was the case with 20p undated coins. Another reason is that The Royal Mint only release a certain number of coins and this makes them desirable.

The Peter Rabbit coins have been especially popular with adults and children alike. My son and husband both collect coins and now out of habit I do check my change and give them the coins they want. The Snowman is the latest addition and I am hoping to find one before my boys do. I would pop it into Dylan’s Christmas stocking because I know that he would appreciate it.

The other popular coins include Paddington and the Olympics many sell for more than the 50p but a quick look on Ebay suggests that some people will try to sell for much more. Kew Gardens 50p coins are considered to be especially rare and sell for around £80-100 and therefore these are worth holding onto.

Yet collecting coins is not new and the Golden Eagle Coin both buys and sells coins and precious metals including gold and silver. Buying gold is a good way to invest your money and certainly makes a wonderful gift for those you love. Investing in coins can be profitable and I am certainly happy to pop a few coins away that I have and see if in the future they can make me rich!

Buying a gold bar or similar would also make a great gift because it is likely to increase in value over time. It makes sense to buy this rather than just sit on the money as money does depreciate in value whereas history has shown that gold does not.

I don’t know how rare they are but I have two coins from the Peter Rabbit collection, I’d love to collect the whole set as a keepsake and have been checking all the 50ps I get, however I’m only looking for the Peter Rabbit collection and nothing else, which makes me wonder if I’ve ever had in my possession, a coin worth thousands… Oh the joys it could’ve done! x
