How to Find an Amazing Diamond on a Budget

April 25, 2021 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

Everyone who loves tradition wants to buy a diamond for their love, but diamonds are not cheap and it is a little unbecoming to be too stingy with such matters. Is there a way to find an amazing diamond on budget to get the best of both worlds? Yes, there is! Read on to learn how.

Avoid the High Street

While it is tempting to stop and admire the beautiful gemstones sparkling alluringly in a high street jewelers’ window, step away from those shiny temptations! Any high street retail establishment will have high overheads as they will be paying top rates of rent and local taxes for the privilege of having a prime location. A small grubby jeweler whose store lies off the beaten track is more likely to offer you a better deal, and an online retailer the best one yet! Low overheads means a wider profit margin and that means better bargains for you!

Know Enough to Get By

When you are first looking for a diamond to buy and have little to no knowledge of how diamonds are rated, and what the real difference between an E rating and a G rating might be, never mind a thorough understanding of the four Cs, it is all too easy to feel overwhelmed by it all, and end up not choosing any stone at all due to having too much choice!

So, before you go anywhere near a diamond store or website, do some research. Understand the difference between the ratings, know what is meant by A Cut Above diamonds, and check out what sort of prices the size and quality of diamonds that you are hoping to buy are going for. This will help manage your expectations and give you a good idea of what prices to expect – and how low you will feasibly be allowed to push the sale price!

Think Fancy!

Very often you can get a large, high-quality diamond for a surprisingly low price simply by including the strongly colored diamonds known as ‘fancy stones’ in your search. Colored diamonds are made from carbon, albeit with issues: changes within the structure of the stone or contaminants like nitrogen (which causes orange, yellow and brown diamonds), or boron (which can give a diamond a lovely deep green color). If you love things to be a bit quirky and out of the norm, then a colored diamond might be just what you are looking for.

A Cut Above

Choose your diamond cut carefully as sometimes a lighter weighted diamond can look bigger than a heavier (and thus more expensive one). This is because some diamond cuts are deep, and a lot of the stone is hidden in the setting with only a relatively small face on show. Choosing a shallow cut diamond, means that you can actually get a lightweight stone that looks impressively large for a modest amount of money.

Weigh It Up

If you are given a choice, choose oddly weighted diamonds. It may seem counterintuitive, but you could potentially get a larger diamond – 1.15 carats instead of 1 carat, for example – because round figures (to a quarter of a carat) are preferred by buyers rather than awkward ‘uneven’ numbers. If you can save by getting a larger stone – well, you would be silly not to!
