Saving Your Money As A University Student

October 31, 2022 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

One of the most common and well-known elements of the university experience is to do with money. Everyone knows that being a student can be really difficult, and that’s especially true of the financial side of things, which can often be quite stressful. If you are about to become a university student and you are wondering what you can do to make the financial side of things work for you, there are a few options available that you might want to consider, and those are what we will discuss below.

Set Up A Budget Spreadsheet

Before you go to uni, you should set up a budget spreadsheet on your computer that you are going to closely follow to the letter. This is something that can really help a great deal, and it will make you feel a lot more in control when you are fully aware of what money you actually have coming in and going out each month. It’s good to be as detailed as you can with this spreadsheet, and to ensure that you are actually following it to the letter too. That simple rule of thumb will do wonders for you in terms of keeping hold of your finances during university.

Shop Around For Everything

Every time you are going to buy something or put money down on something, you should do yourself the favour of shopping around for it first. In other words, get into the habit of looking at different providers and stores, and make sure that you are getting the item for the best possible price. That applies to everything from groceries to university accommodation – saving money on both the small and the big expenditures can really help in the long run, so be sure not to overlook it.

Keep Close Track Of Spending

It’s a really good idea to make sure that you are keeping close track of your spending, as this is going to be the kind of thing that pays off handsomely very soon. Keeping a close eye on your spending is likely going to be difficult a lot of the time, but it’s something that you should definitely practice if you want to keep on top of your finances as best as you can. With that in mind, you should definitely find that it helps you in keeping your money in one place, which is what this is all about.

Be Very Careful With Borrowing
It might be necessary at some point or another to borrow some money. The most common way that students tend to do this is through an overdraft, or a credit card, though the latter is more expensive to pay off. But whatever way you do this, if you do indeed borrow money, you need to take great care to ensure that you are not borrowing more than you need to, and that you have a plan in place right away for paying it back. This will help you to avoid debt, which is really important.
