Growing up I remember channel four being the new channel and it was so exciting! It’s hard to believe that in my lifetime TV has changed so much which is why I was thrilled to get invited to the BBC TVL Moments That Connect Us Campaign. I remember rushing home from school to watch Sons and Daughters and Neighbours was most definitely a backdrop to my teenage years. Who can forget Charlene and Scott’s wedding to Angry Andersons iconic song? Everyone was talking about it!
There are some key TV moments and shows that have impacted me and my family for various reasons. I have watched some series like Casualty for as long as I can remember. I used to record it to watch when I was doing the ironing on a Sunday afternoon! Then there are others including live sport on TV that are one-off moments that stay with you.
I have a few TV programmes that I recommend. However, do remember that you need a TV Licence to watch live TV – if you are unsure check out TV Licencing as they provide you with all you need to know about watching TV legally!
A TV show that is still always on in our house is Gavin and Stacey. No matter how we are feeling an episode or two of this glorious show brings us together. It is something I watch over and over with my teenagers and adult children. We all sit downstairs together and giggle at the silliness.
Gavin and Stacey is known for its genuine and heartfelt storytelling. The series revolves around the love story between Gavin from Essex and Stacey from Wales, exploring the dynamics of their families and relationships. The warmth and authenticity of the characters make it easy for viewers to connect with the show on an emotional level.
The show features a diverse cast of characters spanning different age groups. From the younger couple of Gavin and Stacey to the older, more eccentric characters like Nessa and Uncle Bryn, the series provides a range of perspectives and experiences. This multigenerational approach makes it appealing to viewers of all ages, fostering a sense of inclusivity. We just love it!
The second TV programme that has impacted me is Normal People. I adored this series and usually, I have read a book before I watch a series like this but this was the other way around. I discovered the series and then read the book!
Normal People is a television series based on the novel by Sally Rooney. It follows the complex relationship between Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron, two Irish teenagers navigating love, friendship, and self-discovery. The series spans several years, chronicling the ups and downs of their connection as they move from high school to university and beyond. “Normal People” explores themes of intimacy, communication, and the impact of societal expectations on relationships, offering a nuanced and emotionally resonant portrayal of young love and personal growth.
I thought this series was so emotional and beautifully made. I have watched it three times over! I loved discussing with friends whether we thought they eventually found their way back to each other.
The final TV programme that I have enjoyed is Peaky Blinders.
Peaky Blinders is a British crime drama created by Steven Knight, and it premiered on BBC Two in 2013. The series follows the Shelby crime family in the aftermath of World War I and their rise to power in the criminal underworld.
“Peaky Blinders” has gained widespread acclaim for its compelling storytelling, complex characters, and stylish period setting. Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Thomas Shelby, the cunning and ambitious leader of the Peaky Blinders, has been particularly praised. My family originated from Birmingham and I loved seeing Birmingham in those days. I also love social history and therefore the programme ticked all my boxes!
TV has such a direct impact on us and it influences societal norms, challenges stereotypes, and prompts conversations on critical issues. Whether through educational documentaries, thought-provoking dramas, or entertaining comedies, television holds the power to shape our collective consciousness, contributing to the way we perceive ourselves, others, and the world around us. As a teacher, I have often encouraged my students to watch TV to gain a better understanding of society and issues.
Although how we consume the media has changed so much already in my lifetime there is something special about watching a series together as a family or debating characters and storylines with friends.
