Want to be Less Wasteful? Here’s What You Need to Do

June 16, 2020 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

If you even take a minute to consider how much rubbish and waste you produce every week, and how much you can do to reduce it, you’d be surprised! The waste that we produce every day has a very huge impact on our environment, to say the least, and if you want to do your bit for the planet that you live in, here’s some help your way.

Read on to discover some quick tips and tricks on how you can actively be less wasteful.

Be Paper Wise

From paper towels to boxes from the take-outs that you order- they all may be disposable and recyclable, but they are still contributing to deforestation and pollution, if not more. From now on, try to limit your use of paper and paper products, and look for other alternatives that you can reuse. Not only will this help you save the environment while you’re at it, but you’ll also end up saving a decent amount from your monthly spend.

Switch to Reusable

Do yourself and the Earth a favour by investing in a few reusable lunch containers and water bottles, and make it a point to use them to pack your lunch as opposed to the little sandwich bags. It also makes sense to have them handy when you’re dining out, and request to have the leftovers be packed in these containers instead of the foil wraps and plastic bags they usually get packed in.

Choose Local

Look at the food in your kitchen- how much of it comes with a plastic cover or packing, and is bought from a supermarket where it probably traveled miles away from? We bet a lot! By simply buying more of food from your local farmer’s market, you can not just save a lot on food expenses, but also help reduce your carbon footprint and waste (since everything is bought locally). Meal planning also helps reduce waste.

Be Mindful of Water

Water wastage is very real- think about all those times you leave the tap running when you brush your teeth. Every single drop of water counts, and being mindful of the amount of water you consume everyday can really help. You can consider installing water conserving devices such as a low flow shower head to really make an impact.

Use Cloth

Whether you’re removing your makeup with a makeup remover or heading off to the market to buy some groceries- switch to using cloth and cloth products whenever possible as opposed to the plastic counterparts. Always have a couple of cloth bags in your handbag or vehicle with you, so that you can use them when running errands and getting stuff home- you can always wash them and they’re as good as new. And yes, cloth napkins instead of paper napkins rule- you’ll be doing so much good to the environment that way!
