6 Jobs to do this Bank Holiday Weekend to Save and Make Money

April 28, 2017 by EmmaB Leave a Comment

Bank Holiday weekends are typically used to do some home and garden jobs.  At this time of the year we like to have a good sort out. It is time to get the house ready for the summer months.  It is a time to declutter and there are ways to turn this to profit.

  • Our garage becomes our dumping ground.  When we are finished with something it ends up in our garage for a few months until we decide what to  do with it.  There are ways to turn junk to cash though.  Wipe down these old pieces and take some photos and pop them on local selling sites.  Local sites are especially good for larger pieces that you don’t want to post or that will cost more to sort out a courier.  Do be warned though you will still get some people turning up to collect a slide that doesn’t fit in a hatchback!  Yes this happened to us recently.
  • Start tidying the garden and planting up seedlings.  Ask people for cuttings of flowers you like as they are free compared with hitting the garden center.  Local school  or church fairs are also great places to pick up plants cheaply. My Popa’s garden is a riot of colour and I regularly take cuttings of his, it is also nice and familiar to have his handiwork growing in my garden.  I also have things from my nans garden which was a place she loved.  She cultivated  many pots and plants and it is nice that they live on in her memory.
  • Look at planting some seasonal vegetables and fruits in a small section of the garden.  This is great fun for   children who will then enjoy eating the fruits of their labour. Use RHS site for guidance on what to plant.
  • Sort our wardrobes, as you start wearing fewer layers look at what will not fit next winter or looks a little tired from constant wearing.  Before you you charity shop list on Ebay and see what goes. This then provides the money needed to go and replace with new knitwear.
  • Clean windows.  Now that the sun starts shining it is obvious how mucky windows are. Once clean windows are notoriously hard to keep smear free.  We follow some old tried and tested methods including using vinegar and water in a spray bottle.  this is much cheaper and greener than many of the shop bought products.
  • Eat for free.  By this we mean check out what you have in the freezer and cupboards.  many of us have more than a week’s worth of food already in the house.  This can save money and free up some space.  Last count I think we had 8 tins of tuna – it is time to use some up!

Have I missed anything that you always do this Bank Holiday weekend to save and make money?
