How to get cash for your clutter

October 1, 2015 by EmmaB 10 Comments

If I asked you to go upstairs, open your wardrobe and pull out any clothes you haven’t worn in the past year how many would you find?  For me there would some jeans, definitely some tops and I am ashamed to say it but even some still new with labels.  Now if you did this for the children’s rooms and the husbands wardrobe could you find more?

What about in the attic?   Who is guilty of putting bin bags of clothes up there ready for the next child, a nephew or friends little one.  Do you actually bring them back down and sort them out?  I didn’t for a long time.  These days I am better and I am not such a hoarder as I frequently take to charity shops and last year we did a car boot sale .

However did you know that on average every UK female only wears 70% of their wardrobe. With an average of 144 items of clothing per wardrobe that equates to 43 unworn items!  You can turn these unwanted goods into money that goes straight into your pocket by selling on ebay or using cash for clothes centres.

My tops tips for decluttering are:

  1. When I buy something new I find something to exchange it with.  So if I buy a top I have to get rid of one.
  2. We always have a bag where we can pop things in we no longer want or use, as this fills we then get rid of it.
  3. Be organised, if you use a good system for storing clothes it means that you don’t forget about that nice skirt or whatever.
  4. If something hasn’t been used in six months it is unlikely to be used again.
  5. Don’t keep things in the attic, it is a bad habit and you never use the things again.  The only things in my attic is the Christmas Tree and decorations.
  6. Keep kitchen cupboards organised, rotate your tinned good to ensure things get used up and you don’t buy things you already have. (this is my work in progress tip).

Love this infographic, am sending on to hubby to prove it’s not just me 😉 I’m getting better at recycling clothes but worse at buying new ones – I’ll be wearing the Emperor’s New clothes soon 😀

I’d say give it a year before getting rid of clothes because there will be plenty of seasonal things in your wardrobe. I also have 2 bags for unused clothes – one to reclaim the fabric and reuse, and the other for getting rid.

Great tips! You know what I think I wear far less than 70% of my wardrobe. I recently chucked out 4 bags (1 chucked, 3 donated) which should help x

Oh I’m desperate, I’m a hoarder! I have clothes from when I was 18 that I’ll NEVER fit in again. I really should do what you do and keep a bag aside. I’d be good with the kids clothes and do a clear out ever season.
Great infographic, It’s great to see where our clothes actually go. Surprised Poland is on the top though…

I am getting much more ruthless about hoarding – I used to rotate clothes every six months (summer/winter) for space and throw some out each time but after getting back to my post-pregnancy weight and having loads of stuff I realised I’d never wear again even if it fitted, I had a HUGE clearout. All my daughter’s goes straight to the charity shop or my niece too. Always feels so much better. We do have a black hole of a basement where stuff is stored never to be seen again though 🙂

These are some very clever tips. Your infographic is fab. I love the idea of having the hangers face one way then you reverse them after washing – it would easily show up what you aren’t wearing! x

I am so sentimental! I keep everything then I get fed up with all the clutter and give heaps of clothes to charity. My worst hoarding habit is keeping the children’s things like first shoes, toys, favorite outfitx Silly I know. Brilliant Infograph will have to share on a house keeping group I am in x

I am the worse for hanging onto clothes. We just had a clear out and I donated a bag of my clothes to charity. The thing is, I work as a fashion designer so I know that trends repeat or adapt quite often so I think I might as well keep everything “just in case”. Turns out I hardly reuse anything in my wardrobe! X

I’m a hoarder, I am such a bad hoarder when it comes to clothing. When I buy something, I’ll shove it in my cupboard and forget about the plethora of items that are still at the back of the wardrobe that haven’t ever been worn. I really do need to sort through my stuff but just hating throwing things out

I hang on to all my clothes for as long as i possibly can. I hate throwing clothes away and would rather keep them just in case
