Your home may be totally pulled together with nice, quality furniture and a solid decoration foundation that you don’t want to discard, yet it’s just not as exciting as it used to be. This is actually a pretty common feeling. Your home may look perfect to visitors but when you get too used to it it can seem drab and boring. The following quick decorating tricks let you create a home makeover that won’t soak up all your free time or cost a lot.
Fresh Paint
One very easy and inexpensive way to give a room a whole new look is by adding a fresh coat of paint. If you don’t want to commit to painting an entire room, select a wall to serve as a focal point and give it a coat of paint that will stand out or contrast with other painted walls. If you’re looking to make your home seem larger and cleaner, use a colour that is in the same family as your current colour but several shades lighter. If you have white or buff coloured walls, give the room a splash of noticeable colour.
Shop in Your Home
Before you go shopping for new pieces, take inventory of what you already own. Most people have items in their home, whether in storage or used in another space, that might be exactly what is needed. Imagine how that old mirror would look with a fresh coat of paint or gilding. It might go perfectly over your mantle. Or that wicker storage chest in the guest room would become a stunning coffee table with some spray paint and a large piece of glass cut to fit on the top. Get creative and play with things you already own.
Change the Hardware
Go from the standard contractor doorknobs to something fresh and new, perhaps shiny silver or a bold colour. Replace the hardware in your kitchen with something few and noticeable. Don’t forget to look at your curtain rods and see if they can use some updating too.
Go Green
Add plants to your home as they brighten up space, make people feel more comfortable and studies have shown that they can actually promote good health. Large, noticeable plants can really add some spark to your home.
Change the Lighting
The easiest way to change the look of a room is simply by changing the light bulbs. A dimmer light will make it seem cosier and warmer, while a brighter light will add space and airiness to a room. By moving your light fixtures around you change the shadows of the room which will actually change the way you view the room. Take it up a notch by purchasing new light fixtures.
Accessorize
Create a whole new look to a room simply by changing a few of the accessories. The key is to stay cheap and go bold. Don’t spend a lot on accessories as they’re not meant to last a lifetime, they have a short shelf life in your home. But your accessories should be bold, let them really make a statement and create a look.
Garden
Treat your garden as another room and make sure this is also looked after. Paint the fencing, rake up the leaves and use The Tree Center to freshen up garden with new shrubs and pops of colour.
None of these interior decorating tricks is very time consuming or expensive, so if you find that you have a little extra cash and a free weekend, you could combine several tricks and perform a weekend makeover on your home.
