Creating a budget is the first step to get your finances in order. Having a clear picture of how much you earn and spend each month can help you immensely to plan out your financial moves for the future.

It sure is time-consuming work to create a perfectly working budget for yourself, but once you have it, the majority of your work is done. Now you just have to tweak it according to your spending and income change.

Also, after creating a budget ensure that you stick to it and make the necessary changes along the way according to your financial goals.

2.     Never use credit cards to buy things you can’t afford

We don’t think much about buying expensive things in our 20’s, probably because we’re fascinated by material possessions. We would buy things on a credit card just to show the world that we’re loaded. But, that’s so wrong.

The idea here is to increase your net worth, not your material possessions. So, take a note of how much you earn per hour, then every time you think of buying something, ask yourself – IS MY XYZ HOURS OF WORK WORTH IT FOR THIS THING?

If yes, then go ahead and buy it. If not, then you know what to do.

3.     Invest

You can earn money by working, but that can’t work forever. So why not have your money work for you?

You can never increase your net worth just by keeping your money safely tucked into your pocket. So, start making smart investments in your 20’s.

Invest in real estate and stocks, put in your money in some start-up, or just start your own venture. Explore all the investment opportunities that will generate more money for you in the future.

4.     Set up an emergency fund

The money you put in an emergency fund can help you avoid taking out a loan for any unexpected expenses that may arise such as repairs or medical bills.

It’s recommended to put at least six months’ worth of living expenses into an emergency fund, but considering the current scenario of pandemic and high unemployment rates, it’s better to save more and be prepared.

5.     Pay off debt

If you have any kind of debt, you must make paying it off a priority in your 20’s. That’s because, owing a large sum of money has the potential to hurt your credit score, plus you’ll end up paying a lot in interest charges if you carry the debt for a longer period.

Check your budget and consider how much money you can put towards debt repayment every month.

6.     Manage your money properly

With time your income is bound to increase, but that doesn’t mean you should start spending more. Instead, consider doing these things –

·       Increase contribution to your retirement, savings, or debt repayment account.
