Erin has now started the in the juniors and this means that she is no longer entitled to the universal free chool lunches that are provided in Key Stage 1.  Instead I now need to provide a healthy, nutrional lunch.  My children also like variety in their lunch boxes and do not want the same thing day after day.

Build a healthy back to school lunchbox with Aldi by Emma at Mums Savvy Savings. #LunchboxIdeas #HealthyLunchIdeas #SchoolLunchbox

Eight million children are heading back to school and parents face the dilemma of what to pack their little ones for lunch. Did you know the average parent will be planning 190 lunches each school year, it’s easy to run out of inspiration.

However discount supermarket Aldi is here to give a helping-hand with their range of healthy lunchbox options that all fit within the NHS’ guidelines.

Further to this, Aldi recently removed all added sugar from its entire range of own brand children’s soft drinks. This provides parents with a whole host of healthier options to add to the lunchbox each school day.

Lunchboxes should:

  • Be based on starchy carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, rice and pasta using wholegrain where possible
  • Include fresh fruit and vegetables/salad
  • Add a source of protein such as beans and pulses, eggs, fish, meat, cheese (or dairy alternative)
  • Include a side dish such as a low-fat and lower-sugar yogurt (or dairy alternative), tea cake, fruit bread, plain rice/corn cakes, homemade plain popcorn, sugar-free jelly
  • Don’t forget a drink such as water, skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, sugar-free or no-added-sugar drinks

Therefore Aldi have put together some meal suggestions and they beat eating the same old sandwiches everyday.

Option 1.

  • Chicken wrap
    • Sliced chicken breast 150g – £1.69
    • Mini Tortilla Wraps 8 Pack  (75700) £0.49
  • Classic fruit salad 200g (80412) £0.99
  • Squidgy pouches fromage frais 80g pack of 4 – £0.75
  • Fruity water (No added sugar) 250ml pack of 6 – £0.99

Option 2.

  • Tuna mayonnaise and sweetcorn bagel
    • Tuna steaks in oil or brine 200g – £0.89
    • Mayonnaise glass jar 475g (47867) £0.59
    • Sweetcorn 326g (8966) £0.39
    • Bagel 5 pack (81228) £0.79
  • Fruity water (No added sugar) 250ml pack of 6 – £0.99

Option 3.

  • Reduced fat houmous with brown sandwich thins
    • Houmous 200g (4956) £0.59
    • Brown sandwich thins 6 pack- £0.59
  • Sliced cucumber (51062) £0.44
  • Mini snack raisins 14g pack of 12 – £0.69
  • Cranberry Light Juice Drink 1 litre (9952) £0.59

My little one loves finger foods and I find lots of chopped up vegetables and fruit works well.  She enjoys cucumber sticks with some hummus which I pop into a little pot.  To vary the sandwich idea I use wraps or even skip the bread altogether and cook up a few chicken strips to eat cold.
