Making money when you are a young teen can be difficult, too young for jobs (I’m not ever going to let her do a paper round in the morning) and yet many of us want to teach our teens about budgeting and making responsible decisions.
This blog has been partly born to document how Chloe along with our support will save 2K for sports tour. So far we have completed a very successful car boot sale. In addition to sorting out what was our junk but anothers persons treasures we are also using her creative talents to hopefully make some money and also save her from spending too much.
When you are 14 you buy birthday presents for lots of friends and this can quickly deplete your allowance that you are trying to save. Therefore we looked where we could save. Chloe loves doing a bit of crafting and I am always amazed at how much some of these handmade gifts sell for at craft fayres. I know they are unique but some of them on etsy and so on seem so simple if you have the right tools. Therefore we looked at what we Chloe could do.
We decided on some hand decorated slate hearts. These seem very popular in local shops and I thought that they could make a good return if she sells them to family and friends. Therefore we sourced a box of slate hearts and bought some pens. By chance I was in The Pound Shop and found some lovely embellishments we could utilise.
Then using the slate hearts, Chloe choose some popular verses and carefully wrote on each slate. She then added the details with the crafts and a little bit of glue. These are really simple and very effective. We are selling them for only £3.99 each or £5. if you need them posting out. Chloe is able to personalise so do ask if you want a specific phrase or a name instead.

Gorgeous- good on her! My daughter had to save for a school trip to Florida – we said we would pay half if she could raise the other half. Luckily we live in a small, safe town so she did have a paper round- and she managed to get a waitressing job too – she was so proud of herself for hitting her target and had a brilliant holiday becuase of it – as well as learning an important lesson on the value of money – when you earn it yourself you realise what it is worth!
